Update:Drug Safety Executive Council Technology Nomination Nominee

BioWisdom’s poster “The Power of MetaData” at the BioIT conference in October 2010 was one of four nominees for the quarterly Drug Safety Executive Council (DSEC) Technology Innovation Award. All the nominated posters can be seen under the “Technology Innovation Award Nominees” tab, at the DSEC Virtual Poster Hall (http://www.chicorporate.com/dsec_poster_list.aspx).

BioIT Europe 2010 – A BioWisdom View

BioIt 2010 WordleAlong with another 1,500 delegates, I attended the Bio-IT World Conference and Expo Europe (http://www.bio-itworldexpoeurope.com/) in Hanover earlier this month (5th – 7th October 2010).  The themes were varied, and ranged from next generation sequencing data management, to discussions around collaborative software, standards & web technologies, to one of the main issues facing pharmaceutical and healthcare companies these days – the thorny problems around data integration and knowledge management.

The underlying difficulties are very similar – we are generating more data, from a wider set of technologies, than ever before, and we need productive tools, technologies and strategies to handle this deluge of data, and get the best value from it all.

Obviously, from BioWisdom’s point of view, integration of data to provide intelligence for drug discovery is close to our hearts, and we presented a poster “The Power of Metadata” showing some of the approaches we are developing. Key concept metadata (semantics, synonyms and taxonomies around healthcare concepts) and assertional metadata (how these concepts interact) provide a basis for translation and harmonisation of data across systems, allowing scientists to search, view and analyse intelligence.

Metawise

Metawise logo

Metawise is a unique and powerful ontology that can identify, translate and connect medically relevant relationships expressed in scientific content. Metawise uses intelligent metadata that is aligned to both reference (e.g. accession number, HGNC term, MedDRA term) or referent (e.g. Disease, Drug, Target, Pathway, Tissue) categories to harmonize differing terminology and semantics. It can also be used to translate terms used by different communities or software applications (e.g. switching from a two dimensional chemical structure to a drug name or a SMILES string. This extends the utility and value of the data whilst preserving the integrity of the original data.

The Joy of Text

We have recently come across a great online resource called wordle (http://www.wordle.net/) which makes some really appealing text clouds such as that shown above. The above cloud was generated by copying and pasting a page about metadata from Wikipedia, but you can also generate a cloud from website by pasting in a URL.  While it’s fun to use it to make pretty pictures it also provides a very useful summary of what a document or a website is all about.  Give it a try!
